Great news from IPCC: the new GWP of R290 is much lower than 3
Two months ago, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released a first version of the report Climate Change 2021 â The Physical Science Basis which will be definitively released in September 2022 and which contains the new official GWP (Global Warming Potential) values for hydrocarbons.
This report show that propane R290 has a 100-year GWP of 0.02, much lower than the traditional assumed value of 3 because of its three atoms of carbon (C3H8). However, 3 is a very low value if compared with most popular HFCs, but still many times higher than the new value. Isobutane R600a, another natural refrigerant gas, also has a new 100-year GWP much less than 1 and equal to 0.006.
On the other hand, the new 100-years GWP of the R32, that is considered the HFC with the lowest GWP, changed from 675 to 771. For this reason, it most likely no longer will be possible to use it in new equipment from January 1 2025.
In conclusion, the only way to save our planet is to promote an increasingly consistent use of natural refrigerant fluids such as propane R290 and isobutane R600a. Euroklimat, currently a leader in the market of R290 chillers and heat pumps, has now been active in this sector for almost 20 years, producing units that protect the environment and the health of all of us.
